Terminal A, also known as the Marine Air Terminal, is known for its distinctive Art Deco design and history. Terminal A is currently closed to the public. There are no commercial flights operating. Modern Aviation opens in a new tab, a private operator, is based at Terminal A.
The historic Marine Air Terminal
The Marine Air Terminal opened in 1940 as the New York terminus for the world’s first transatlantic passenger airline service, provided by Pan American Airways’ Yankee Clippers.
To design the buildings and landscape the grounds, LaGuardia hired Delano & Aldrich, whose extensive portfolio included a half-dozen airports designed for Pan American Airways—all with seaplane service.
Delano turned out a handsome complex in what might be called “Airport Moderne.” Unlike his firm’s more traditional productions, the terminal’s design depended on pure geometric forms, plain materials, and ornaments suggesting flight.
Terminal A also houses the bust of Fiorello Henry La Guardia, the 100th mayor of New York City from 1934 to 1946.
